It’s finally summer! And with the return of warm weather comes moving season across Canada. For many, the next few weeks will be all about cardboard boxes and preparations.
In the midst of all this logistics, what about your medical alert system? If you or a loved one is about to move home, here’s a step-by-step guide to making the transition with peace of mind, and ensuring your safety is never interrupted.
Step 1: Assess whether the system is still needed
The first question to ask during a major life change is what the actual needs will be in the future home.
- Moving into a seniors’ residence: If you or your relative is moving into a living environment that already incorporates its own safety devices and emergency pulls, our system may no longer be required. In this case, simply return the unit to us and terminate your subscription with ease.
- Staying at home or in a self-contained apartment: If the security of a central emergency station is still essential in your new home, the system will follow. The following steps will help you make the transition as smooth as possible.
Step 2: Let Us Know in Advance (The Administrative Checklist)
No matter which device model you have, we strongly recommend calling us ahead of time to notify us of your move. During your call, we will need to update four essential pieces of information:
- The new physical address: This is the most crucial piece of information for the alarm center to guide emergency services to the right place in the event of an emergency.
- The exact date of the move: This allows us to schedule the data update in our system on the right date, without interrupting your coverage.
- Billing address: If this changes at the same time as your place of residence.
- The emergency contact list: This detail is often overlooked! If you’ve included neighbors in your list of trusted contacts, they won’t be around after the move. This is the ideal time to update the phone numbers and names of the people you need to contact first.
Step 3: Follow the Steps for Your Specific Device Model
Depending on your plan and equipment, reinstallation in the new home will differ:
For the at-home and at-home+ devices
These fixed models need to be unplugged and then reinstalled in the new home. For your convenience:
- Before you leave: Take a photo of the current connections (power sockets, phone lines if applicable) with your smartphone to remind you of the setup.
- On arrival: You can call us to have installation instructions e-mailed back to you, or contact us on moving day to have an agent guide you step-by-step over the phone as you connect.
For Mobility and Mobility+ packages
These portable systems operate anywhere on the cellular network and require no physical installation.
- The only step: Make sure you’ve made the call mentioned in step 2 to update the new reference address, billing and contacts. Once there, simply plug the charging base into a standard power outlet and the device is ready to use.
Moving is a big step. By planning the transfer of your medical alert system in advance, you can ensure that safety is guaranteed from the very first night in your new home.
